History & Legacy of the Omega Speedmaster
The Omega Speedmaster was first introduced in 1957 as part of Omega’s "Professional" collection, alongside the Seamaster and Railmaster models. Originally designed as a racing chronograph, the Speedmaster was crafted with motorsport enthusiasts in mind.
The Speedmaster earned its legendary status as the first watch to be worn on the Moon. During NASA’s Apollo 11 mission in 1969, astronaut Buzz Aldrin wore the Speedmaster while walking on the lunar surface. The watch underwent rigorous testing by NASA and was the only one to pass all the required tests for use in space—extreme temperatures, vacuum, humidity, shocks, vibrations, and zero gravity.
Over more than six decades, the Speedmaster has been linked to pivotal moments in space exploration, motor sports, and horological innovation. Today, it's one of the most iconic chronographs in history, available in manual-wind, automatic, and limited-edition versions. Its legacy continues to captivate watch enthusiasts worldwide.
