The Story
OMEGA
Omega is a Swiss luxury watchmaker known for producing high-quality and prestigious timepieces. The company was founded in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Louis Brandt started as a watchmaker, and he produced key-wound pocket watches. Originally, it was called "Louis Brandt et Frère" and they primarily produced pocket watches. It was until 1903 that the company officially adopted the name "Omega." Louis’s sons, Louis-Paul and César joined the business and played a significant role in expanding its operations.
Throughout its history, Omega has achieved several significant milestones and has been associated with numerous noteworthy events. Innovations and precision in the early 20th century, Omega became renowned for its precision and innovative watchmaking.
Omega Speedmaster
The Omega Speedmaster was first introduced in 1957 as part of Omega’s "Professional" collection, alongside the Seamaster and Railmaster models. Originally designed as a racing chronograph, the Speedmaster was crafted with motorsport enthusiasts in mind.
The Speedmaster earned its legendary status as the first watch to be worn on the Moon. During NASA’s Apollo 11 mission in 1969, astronaut Buzz Aldrin wore the Speedmaster while walking on the lunar surface. The watch underwent rigorous testing by NASA and was the only one to pass all the required tests for use in space. These included exposure to extreme temperatures, vacuum, and humidity, as well as resistance to shocks, vibrations, and even the absence of gravity.
Spanning more than six decades, the Omega Speedmaster is deeply connected to pivotal moments in space exploration, motorsports, and horological innovation. Today, it stands as one of the most iconic and beloved chronograph watches in history. Available in a range of models—from the classic manual-wind Moonwatch to modern automatic versions and limited-edition releases honoring space milestones and other historic events—its legacy continues to captivate watch enthusiasts around the world.
