The Story

Watch Overview

This is a classic Glycine Automatic Diver wristwatch, reference 4142, dating from the 1970s and made in Switzerland. A vintage favorite among dive watch enthusiasts, it combines rugged functionality with very cool cushion-case design. This example is still in good condition, showing some signs of wear consistent with age, with a solid case, funtional bezel, and a pretty sunburst gray dial showing a little bit of charming patina.

It is powered by the ETA 2472 self-winding movement, featuring 17 jewels, central hours and minutes, sweep-seconds, a date display at 3 o’clock, a 42-hour power reserve, and a frequency of 18,000 vph. The dial is accented with baton hour markers, a white minute/second track, and luminous matching hands, ensuring excellent legibility.

Cased in a 37.5mm cushion stainless steel case with a black uni-directional rotating bezel (count-up and dual time), screw-down crown, screw case back, and water-resistant up to 600 feet (182 meters / 19 ATM). Fitted with a stainless steel bracelet suitable for wrists up to approx. 7 1/4" (18.4cm). This Glycine Diver is a very collectible timepiece. Box & Papers: Not included.

History & Legacy of Glycine

Founded in 1914 by Eugène Meylan in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, Glycine Watch SA has built a reputation for crafting precision-engineered timepieces. Although their collection includes watches for divers, sailors, and sports use, Glycine is especially distinguished for its pilot and aviation-inspired watches.

One of Glycine’s most iconic series is the Airman, first introduced in 1953. The Airman was among the earliest wristwatches designed to track multiple time zones, and it became a favorite among aviators for its 24‑hour dial, rotating bezel, and locking features. Over time, it achieved cult status in both civilian and military aviation circles.

Even after Glycine’s acquisition by the Invicta Watch Group in 2016, the brand has continued to produce Swiss‑made watches and emphasizes preserving its heritage. While discussions among enthusiasts suggest some changes in design and strategy, Glycine remains known for reliability, robust build quality, and a style that reflects its aviation roots.
