History & Legacy of Hampden

The Hampden Watch Company was an American watch manufacturer that operated from 1877 to 1927, originally based in Springfield, Massachusetts, and later in Canton, Ohio. Its roots trace back to 1866, when Donald J. Mozart founded the Mozart Watch Company in Rhode Island, which later became the New York Watch Company and eventually reorganized as Hampden. In 1886, industrialist John C. Dueber, founder of the Dueber Watch Case Company, acquired a controlling interest in Hampden and moved both companies to Canton, where they shared manufacturing facilities and helped establish the city as a major center of U.S. watchmaking. By 1890, Hampden had introduced America’s first size 16, 23-jewel movement, and by the early 20th century, the company employed over 2,000 people. In 1923, the firms officially merged as the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company, but declining sales led to its sale in 1925 and eventual bankruptcy in 1927. In a historic move, the company’s assets—including machinery and 21 American watchmakers—were sold in 1930 to Amtorg Trading Corporation and relocated to the Soviet Union, where they helped establish the First State Watch Factory in Moscow, marking the end of Hampden’s legacy in American watchmaking.
